Avebury

Last winter we meant to go see the stone circles of Avebury, but ended up needing to skip the outing due to flooded roads. As we were going somewhat near on our way down south, we took the opportunity to stop by.
Avebury is within 30 miles of Stonehenge. Unlike Stonehenge though, you are still allowed to walk right up next to the stones. It's a quieter, more personal trip than the tourist bustle at Stonehenge. Many families were leaning right up next to the stones having picnics.
We had a little debate going on whether this was the World's Ugliest Sheep, or whether it was someone's first day learning to sheer.
You can see that the circles are larger than at Stonehenge, but the stones are smaller. The whole thing is enclosed by a ditch. We read that building the ditch and placing the stones would have required 1.5 million man-hours!
Speaking of man-hours, Silbury Hill outside of town was also man made. No one has figured out what all that effort was for.
The very cute village of Avebury is within the stone circle.

These trees in Avebury are supposedly the inspiration for Tolkien's "walking trees" in Lord of the Rings.
Camille gives our trip to Avebury two thumbs up!

  1. Quieter, more personal sounds perfect! And that poor sheep... maybe that is his rebellious teenage haircut!
